Daniel Kalinowski

Daniel Kalinowski – Prof. dr hab. in Humanities. He has been employed in the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Pomeranian University in Słupsk since 1996. His doctoral studies were in Polish literary aphorism of the 19th century. His post doctoral degree was granted on the basis of a thesis on the reception of Franz Kafka’s work in Poland.

At the Pomeranian University in Słupsk (formerly Pomeranian Academy) he has supervised more than a dozen Bachelor and Masters students and several doctoral candidates in literary studies. In the structure of the Pomeranian University he has filled the posts of the head of the Department of Literary Anthropology and Kashubian-Pomeranian Research in the Institute of Polish Studies, deputy dean of the Faculty of Philology and History, head of Third Level Studies, dean of the Pomeranian University’s Faculty of Philology and is currently head of the Doctoral College.

He is a section editor of the scholarly journals Acta Cassubiana, Nasze Pomorze [Our Pomerania] and editor-in-chief of Biuletyn Rady Języka Kaszubskiego [Bulletin of the Council for the Kashubian Language], member of the programme boards of the Museum of Kashubian-Pomeranian Literature and Music in Wejherowo and the Museum of Central Pomerania in Słupsk. He has been a stipendist of the Foundation for Polish Sciences and carried out research in projects of the National Science Centre and National Programme for the Development of Humanities. He is a member of the Commission for Studies in Literature of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Kashubian Commission of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the World and the Kashubian Language Council, as well as a member of the Board of the Kashubian Institute.

His scholarly interests include literature, dramaturgy and Kashubian language theatre, Buddhist culture in Polish tradition, Jewish motifs in Polish literature and Polish reception of Franz Kafka’s works.

He is the author of the following books: Określanie horyzontu: Studia o polskiej aforystyce literackiej XIX wieku [Describing the Horizon: Studies in Polish Literary Aphorism in the 19th Century], Światy Franza Kafki: Sekwencja polska [The worlds of Franz Kafka: The Polish sequence], Raptularz kaszubski [Kashubian Notebook], Żydzi polscy i pomorscy: Studia o ludziach i literaturze [Polish and Pomeranian Jews: Studies of People and Literature], Sylwa kaszubskie [Kashubian Silva], Pasaże kaszubskie [Kashubian Passages], Cztery Szlachetne Prawdy: Motywy buddyjskie w literaturze polskiej do czasów pozytywizmu [Four Noble Truths: Buddhist Motifs in Polish Literature up to the Positivist Period], Teatr kaszubski: Fenomen, formy, środowisko [Kashubian Theatre: Phenomenon, Forms and Environment]. He also wrote – with Adela Kuik-Kalinowska – the following monographs: Od Smętka do Stolema: Wokół literatury Kaszub [From Smętk to Stolem: On Kashubian Literature], Trzy Skarby: Motywy buddyjskie w Polsce [Three Treasures: Buddhist Motifs in Poland] and Literatura kaszubska: Rekonesans [Kashubian Literature: Reconnaissance].

He was the co-editor of the series Wielkie Pomorze, of its following volumes: Tożsamość i wielokulturowość [Identity and Multiculturalism], Kultura i sztuka [Culture and Art], Wierzenia i religie [Belief and Religion], Społeczności i narody [Communities and Nations], Wojna i pokój [War and Peace], Gryfici i ich dziedzictwo [The Griffin Dynasty and Their Inheritance].

He was the editor of a series on the sacred in literature: Sacrum sekularne [Secular Sacrum], Sacrum w doświadczeniu kobiet [Women’s Experience of the Sacred], Pogranicza sacrum w medium literatury [Borders of the Sacred in the Medium of Literature] and Sacro-pop [Sacro-pop].
